The Organic Recycler, based in Dallas/Fort Worth Texas, has transformed its operations with machinery from Powerscreen Texas. Equipment like Komptech star screens and Ecotec trommels have enabled the company to process over 3 million yards of material annually. Helping them scale their business, meet customer demands, and cement their role as a leader in the recycling industry in the state of Texas.
Founded in 2013 by Tim Sansone, The Organic Recycler was built with a commitment to sustainability, customer service, and adaptability, the company has become a prime example of what happens when passion meets hard work. The partnership between Tim Sansone and Jud Smith, Co-Owner, has allowed the business to thrive over the past decade.
A Story of Dedication
From its modest beginnings, the company’s first yard at Forest Hill accepted tree brush, and Tim was there on the ground, doing what it took to process the material and produce quality products. This hands-on approach helped the company establish itself as a trusted name for both small residential customers and large-scale landscaping businesses. Tim’s expertise in the industry was quickly complemented by Jud Smith, who joined as a co-owner in 2015. Their focus has always been on the customer, a principle that continues to guide the business today.
Broad Array of Products and Services
Now employing around 180 people, The Organic Recycler offers a wide variety of products and services, from different types of mulch and soil to compost and bedding mix. In order to meet all their various demands, they have invested in range of equipment supplied by Powerscreen of Texas. This includes Komptech Multistar XL3 star screens, Terex Ecotec Phoenix 2100 and 3300 Trommel screeners, and a Powerscreen Warrior 1800 scalping screener paired with MGL conveyors, allowing them to accurately size their end products to ensure quality at high volume. And with the business supplying both the wholesale and retail markets, a semi-autonomous packing and stacking process capable of handling 750 pallets per day has been installed to meet demand.
Onsite, their Komptech Multistar XL3 star screen processes fines out of single ground material. Utilizing the XL3’s large 17’11” x 4’1” fine screen area, they can process up to 400 cubic yards every hour. Jud Smith, “The main benefits I have seen from the Multistar is that we do not have to grind material, stockpile, then run material separately into a screener. This machine is all in one, and because of that, we lower our production costs and increase our operational efficiency.”
Additionally, they have heavily invested in Terex Ecotec Phoenix trommels, utilizing five 2100s and one 3300 trommel screener. The 2100 series of Phoenix trommels stood out to The Organic Recycler for its popularity and proven high throughput from the 21’2” x 6’4” inclined drum. The friction four-wheel drum drive system and variable speed control give reliability and consistency to their daily operations across multiple sites with varying setups.
The Role of Powerscreen Texas
A strong supply chain is key to sustainable growth. The company’s collaboration with Powerscreen Texas, especially Barry O’Reilly, has been key in supporting its growth. “The reliable machines we’ve purchased through Powerscreen Texas have been a significant factor in our ability to scale operations and meet customer demands,” says Jud.
Sustainable Practices
One of the most notable aspects of The Organic Recycler’s operations is its focus on environmental sustainability, particularly through food and liquids recycling. The company handles roughly 500 pallets of food waste a day, unpackaging them and repurposing the liquids to feed microbes in their compost rows. This process results in a unique compost mix created by combining 3-4 yards of organic material waste with 1 yard of food waste.
The recycling efforts don’t stop there. The Organic Recycler also sorts and recycles all aluminum, plastic, cardboard, and other materials from the food and liquid waste they process. This commitment to reducing waste in landfills and promoting sustainability positions them as leaders in eco-friendly business practices.
Windrow and Static Pile Composting
With six different facilities around the DFW area, The Organic Recycler has built an impressive operation. Their Forest Hill location, the company’s first site, currently occupies 18 acres but is slated to expand to 50 acres. Hutchins, the largest site, spans 100 acres and handles all food waste recycling and liquid disposal. The other locations in Forney, Dallas, Melissa, and Alliance range from 7 to 30 acres, forming a network of facilities capable of processing an annual volume of 3+ million yards of material.
